Claims in American Samoa that dogs are being shot at airport

There are claims in American Samoa that security officers at the Pago Pago International Airport have been shooting dogs who wander onto the runway.

The Samoa News reports that although one airport employee confirmed that guards have been shooting dogs out on the runway, Port Administration Director Tuitele Fofo Tony Tuitele said he knew nothing about it.

Tuitele is quoted by the newspaper as saying that airport police are not supposed to discharge firearms that way and this was news to him.

Samoa News said it received information late last year about the dog shooting. The newspaper quotes an unidentified source saying that the killings were necessary to prevent runway incursions that could be caused by the animals.
