9:44 am on 17 January 2007

The first legal action against Fiji's military commander, Commodore Bainimarama, arising out of the coup will be heard in the Lautoka High Court today.

Fiji TV reports that the action has been brought by the chief executive of the Sugar Cane Growers Council, Jaganath Sami, who was suspended and ordered out of his office by the military late last month.

Mr Sami and his lawyer, Shalend Krishna, filed papers in the Lautoka High Court yesterday.

But they did not disclose the contents of their legal challenge.

The case will be heard by Justice John Connors.
