The Solomon Islands Government is pressing ahead with its plans for a controversial spy unit within the Prime Minister's office.

Although government has been quiet about the establishment of the unit, figures revealed in the 2007 budget estimates show the unit will be manned by 12 agents including a director and a deputy.

This is the first time a Solomons government has successfully established its own in-house spy unit.

Currently all national intelligence work is carried by the police force.
