Solomons government still considering replacement for Shane Castles

11:16 am on 19 January 2007

The Solomon Islands government is still to decide on the appointment of a new Commissioner for the Solomon Islands Police.

This follows the ban imposed on the Australian holder of the post, Shane Castles from re-entering Solomon Islands.

Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare says the government had for sometime held serious reservations and concerns over Mr Castle's terms of appointment and the way he had been acting beyond the limits of his official powers.

Mr Sogavare says the post would be advertised unless the cabinet decided to make a 'direct appointment' of an individual it knew was capable of doing the job.

He says the government has yet to make a final decision on the matter.
