NGO calls for regional action over the latest reports of military violence in Papua

The Pacific Concerns Resource Centre, or PCRC, is calling on the international community to help stop what it says is escalating military violence in Indonesia's Papua province.

The Indonesian army is reportedly carrying out a military operation in the central highlands of Papua in response to the killing of two military personnel.

The PCRC's assistant director for decolonisation, Rex Rumakiek, who is a Papuan, says the organisation is calling on the Pacific Islands Forum, the European Union and the United Nations to pressure the Indonesian government over the military's actions.

"We hope that the military should be stopped and never conduct any military operations, because there is no use, these military operations will never achieve any kind of development."

Mr Rumakiek says the forum should send a fact finding mission to Papua.

He also says the PCRC is calling on the Australian government to establish means to control Indonesia.
