The former Wallaby and Fijian rugby international Illivasi Tabua has been named as the new Fiji national coach replacing Wayne Pivac.

It's understood Pivac is heading to the North Harbour Super 14 franchise to take up the head coaching job.

Meanwhile, Tabua's first task will be to guide Fiji through the Pacific 6 Nations and then on to the Rugby World Cup later in the year.

He says he's looking forward to the challenge.

The Fijian Rugby Union is currently searching for suitable support staff for Tabua.
