Solomons budget session rescheduled for next week

8:00 pm on 24 January 2007

In Solomon Islands, the budget session of Parliament scheduled to start today has been rescheduled for next week as the government tries to resolve an impasse with the Solomon Islands National Teachers Association or SINTA.

SINTA has called on members to boycott classes from the start of the school year this week.

The organisation claims that the government has failed to pay out allowancess for leave and housing, while there are also issues surrounding teachers' contracts.

SINTA officials and the prime minister Manasseh Sogavare have met on two occasions this week.

Mr Sogavare said on Monday he had not been briefed by Government officials about the teachers' grievances.

The prime minister has rescheduled the budget session with the likelihood that the 2007 draft budget will be amended to accommodate the teachers' concerns.
