Fiji tourism campaign does well in New Zealand

Fiji's tourism industry has recorded a large increase in bookings following a promotion campaign which started in New Zealand last Monday.

The interim minister for tourism, Bernadette Rounds Ganilau, says one big hotel alone had had more than 1,000 bookings.

The surge in bookings follows the introduction of an incentive package offering a 40% discount on airfares and hotel rates.

Ms Ganilau says despite travel warnings from some countries, people are the best judges of whether Fiji is a safe place to visit and they are coming.

New Zealand prime minister, Helen Clark, has warned New Zealanders that they could be in danger in Fiji because of the military's abuse of human rights.

But New Zealand will not impose any trade bans and will only progressively cut aid to Fiji which is currently valued at 4-point-8 million US dollars a year.
