New claims about fate of Amelia Earhart

There is a new mystery surrounding the disappearance of the American aviatrix Amelia Earhart, 70 years ago.

She is generally thought to have gone missing in the northern Pacific in July 1937 while flying from Lae to Howland Island nearly five thousand kilometres away.

But a new claim from Papua New Guinea suggests that Ms Earhart's twin-engine Lockheed Electra crashed in the mountains of Morobe province.

A man in Morobe's Bulolo district, Givisa Gibis, has even claimed that he has evidence - parts of the aircraft, its serial number, number of the assembly plant, two registration tags and the nose cover - to prove his claim.

Mr Gibis insists his father and other locals knew about the plane crash and that the crash site was 're-discovered' in October last year.
