Samoan MP calls for ambulance to save lives

4:48 pm on 26 January 2007

An Independent MP in Samoa has called on the government to provide an ambulance for his constituency's district hospital in order to save more lives.

The MP, Motuopua'a Aisoli Va'ai, who is a doctor by profession, has told parliament that an ambulance is needed to transfer patients from Sataua district hospital to the main Tuasivi hospital in Savaii island for treatment.

The MP says a woman died before she was transferred to the main hospital because of waiting too long for an ambulance.

Motuopua'a raised the same issue last year with another call to the ministry of health for more medical supplies.

He said that often pills and chemicals would be unavailable.
