A man in the north of New Caledonia has survived a shark attack.

Local press reports say the 30-year-old policeman was fishing under water when he was attacked by a tiger shark.

He says he saw the shark's open mouth but managed to ward a first strike by hitting the shark on its nose.

He says the shark attacked him again but let him go when he managed to hit it in the eye.

He is now in a Noumea hospital where he has had an operation on his leg.
