The Reserve Bank of Fiji has expressed serious concern at the large number of fake currency notes being found in the country.

The Daily Post says already 14 counterfeit notes have been detected and reported to police in the first 37 days of the year.

The deputy governor of the Reserve Bank, Sada Reddy, says even though in monetary terms the value of the counterfeit notes is small, it is a serious offence to produce or pass them on.

Mr Reddy says a new series of currency notes due to be launched soon will have enhanced security features.

The new notes will for the first time include a $100 bill.
