MASI defends Taiwan's attendance of PINA

The Media Association of Solomons Islands, or MASI, has defended the planned participation of Taiwan at a media conference in May.

China has protested against Taiwan attending the Pacific Islands News Association conference in Honiara.

But MASI says allowing Taiwan's participation to be suppressed as suggested would be contrary to everything PINA stands for, given Taiwan's media freedom record.

In its latest global report on media freedom for example, Freedom House has described Taiwan as a consolidated democracy with one of the freest media environments in East Asia because of its firm commitment to judicial independence and economic freedom.

MASI has welcomed China's earlier contributions to Pacific media, saying PINA and its affiliates will build on China's and Taiwan's growing support for media development in the Pacific.
