Flash flood warning renewed for eastern half of Viti Levu

8:21 pm on 13 February 2007

The Nadi Weather Centre has renewed a flash flood warning for the eastern half of Fiji's main island, Viti Levu, after heavy rain this afternoon which is predicted to continue all night.

The warning covers Pacific Harbour, Navua, Suva, Nausori, the Rewa Delta, Tailevu, Korovou and Rakiraki .

The director of meteorology, Rajendra Prasad, says the prospects of flooding accompanied by strong winds tonight are very high.

Disaster authorities have urged people living in low lying areas to heed the advice from the weather office and take immediate precautions to secure their homes, belongings and livestock.

They say evacuation centres will be opened as necessary.

Police have set up a command centre in Nausori to monitor river levels tonight.

Meanwhile, many roads and bridges are still closed either because they were washed away or because they are still under water from yesterday's flooding.
