Fiji's interim cabinet has approved the extension of affirmative action for all underperforming schools and the removal of racially discriminatory provisions.
A government statement says the Social Justice Act will be amended to enable the changes to take place.
A new system for providing assistance to schools has been put in place using a carefully designed "disadvantage index" with set criteria which ranks schools from the most disadvantaged to the least disadvantaged.
The interim cabinet has approved a review of all existing education policies.
But the interim education minister, Netani Sukanaivalu, says programmes which will remain unchanged include those to enhance indigenous Fijian and Rotuman education and to improve education in rural areas.
Programmes to help the education of children with disabilities will also remain unchanged.
