Fiji soldiers given booklet on human rights

9:10 am on 17 February 2007

All soldiers in Fiji will be given a booklet to help them observe international human rights while they perform their duties.

The chair of the Fiji Human Rights Commission, Rodney Acraman, presented a copy to the interim prime minister and military commander, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, in Suva yesterday while copies were handed out to soldiers and police manning checkpoints.

Mr Acraman says given the events of December the 5th, allegations of human rights abuses, and undertakings by the interim administration to investigate those abuses, the Fiji Human Rights Commission thought it important to produce the booklet.

He says the booklet contains important information about protecting national security while upholding human rights at the same time.

The booklet was prepared by the director of the Human Rights Commission, Dr Shaista Shameem, and gives soldiers an overview of human rights and its position when a State of Emergency is in force.
