The volume of mail from the United States has fallen off dramatically since the US Postal Service changed the Marshall Islands to an international destination a year ago, incurring significantly higher mailing costs.
Statistics from the U.S. Department of Transportation showed a drop off of around a third in the first two quarters of last year, compared to the year before.
The Marshall Islands Chamber of Commerce president Jack Niedenthal, said that as a result of the switch from domestic to international, some US-based companies will no longer ship merchandise to the Marshall Islands.
The U.S. Postal Service recently announced another international rate hike for mail to the Marshall Islands that will be implemented later this year.
