Fiji military chief to make comment on Forum coup report

5:15 pm on 20 February 2007

Fiji's interim Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, is due to make a media statement this afternoon giving his response to a report by a Forum Eminent Persons Group on the military takeover .

The document, which is yet to be discussed by Forum Foreign Ministers, calls on Commodore Bainimarama to resign and for him to be replaced by a civilian.

It also says all soldiers should return to their barracks and that elections should be held within two years, at the latest.

There have been several negative responses to the report in Suva.

The Director of the Human Rights Commission, Shaista Shameem, has questioned the integrity of two of the EPG's members.

The Fiji wing of the Labour Party, whose party leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, is now the interim finance minister, has described the report as a piece of rubbish.

The Fiji Times reports quotes the secretary of the wing, Maika Moroca, as saying the findings are encouraging corruption and pro the SDL party, which dominated the ousted government.

The Forum Secretary General, Greg Urwin, is not commenting on the report until it is presented to a meeting of foreign ministers, which is likely to be held early next month.
