The Solomon Islands Kastom Gaden Association says its assessment of the development needs of the people of Makira's weather coast shows a population experiencing greater difficulties than in other areas of the country.

Claudine Watoto of Kastom Gaden says a major problem faced by the about 5,000 residents is security of their food supply.

"In a report called Extreme Living, Extreme Need, Kastom Gaden has outlined a three point action plan to improve their long-term food production and develop income generating activities ."

Claudine Watoto says one of the first steps will be to try and safeguard food security by improving the quality of taro being planted.

We are looking at working with farmers to draw awareness on the problem of taro; need to educate people about the diseases and pests that attack the taro. We need to look at translating those information into two languages as people really need to understand the problems that they are facing.
