Papua New Guinea's Department of Mining has set up a strategy to address the reported claims of non-compliance by operators of the Ramu Nickel Project.

The Minister of Mining, Sam Akoitai told the Post Courier that the Ramu nickel project was permitted by the Government and was ready for development in 2000.

Mr Akoitai says he and his Department are responsible for the implementation of the Mining Agreements, which have been recently misinterpreted.

He made the statement in response to media reports by various authorities on the Ramu nickel project.

Earlier this week, Ramu landowners alleged that both the Government and the developer had breached the Memorandum of Understanding and were seeking legal advice on the issue.
