Tongan government to tackle youth unemployment

4:40 pm on 2 March 2007

The Tongan government has developed a framework for short term training to try and absorb the hundreds of school leavers each year who are unable to find work.

The ministry of training, youth and sports is to establish schemes to impart very specific skills and knowledge for a selective group of trainees.

The training may run for up to three weeks or for just a few days.

It may also include training at a very basic level to get people up to a minimal benchmark that will allow them to take part in later employment programs.

The ministry will also be assisting some trainees to expand their skills through overseas attachments of up to twelve months.
