Inquiry launched into New Zealand's relationship with South Pacific

The Green Party MP who pushed for an inquiry into New Zealand's relationship with South Pacific countries says it comes at a good time.

Parliament's Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Committee is to examine the role the country plays, and could play, in assisting Pacific Island Forum nations to develop sustainable economies.

Keith Locke says recent events in Tonga and Fiji have woken New Zealand and the region up.

He says unless South Pacific countries develop robust economies thing will get worse.
