PNG to double police presence in Solomons

The Papua New Guinea police contingent taking part in the Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands will be doubled when it takes over the role of providing security to the Prime Minister and Governor General.

RAMSI's Special Coordinator, Tim George, says the increase was agreed to following talks with PNG's Prime Minister, Sir Michael Somare, and other PNG officials during his four day visit to Port Moresby last week.

Mr George says PNG has agreed to deploy 10 additional police officers once the arrangement with the Solomon Islands government becomes effective.

He says talks are still underway between RAMSI, PNG and the Solomon Islands Government over whether armed PNG police should come under RAMSI or a bilateral arrangement between Honiara and Port Moresby.
