Solomons foreign minister in Cuba to finalise hiring of Cuban doctors

The Sogavare-led government will sign a deal with Cuba this week to recruit Cuban doctors into Solomon Islands.

Solomon Islands is currently facing an acute doctor shortage.

Foreign Affairs Minister Patterson Oti left on Saturday to meet his counterpart in the Cuban capital, Havana to sign a technical cooperation framework, which will form part of the doctor recruitment exercise.

Under the deal, 40 Cuban doctors will be recruited to serve at the National Referral Hospital in Honiara and also at provincial hospitals and health centres.

Mr Oti says the doctors, who include surgeons, gynaecologists and other specialists are expected to arrive later this year
