The Suva magistrate's court has issued warrants for the arrest of 5 Fiji police officers who failed to appear in court as prosecution officers.

The Fiji Times reports that the magistrate, John Semisi, has ordered that the five police officers be arrested and brought to his court.

The five were witnesses in a case involving a charge of robbery with violence brought against two men.

The trial could not proceed because only 3 of the 8 witnesses were present.

A senior police spokesman, Superintendent Ulaiasi Ravula, is quoted as saying it is the duty of police officers to appear in court when summoned unless they are sick in which case they have to produce medical certificates.
