PNG Electoral Commissioner announces revised election timetable

11:35 am on 8 March 2007

Papua New Guinea's Electoral Commissioner, Andrew Trawen, has announced new election dates for the 2007 general elections.

Commissioner Trawen says the changes follow Parliament's decision to reduce the polling/campaign period from eight weeks to four,

Under the new rules, writs will be issued on May 4th.

Nominations will close six days later on the 10th of May

Polling will begin on Saturday 3rd of June.

Mr. Trawen says the Electoral Commission is disappointed with the changes as their impact will have negative implications on election administration, candidates and voters

He says it will mean voters will have less time to hear and understand the policies of different candidates and political parties.

Even candidates, he says, will not have sufficient time to explain their goals and objectives to the voters.
