Fiji's interim labour minister declares strike illegal

Fiji's interim labour minister has declared yesterday's lightning strike by 400 workers of the state-owned Post Fiji Limited illegal.

Bernadette Rounds-Ganilau says the walkout took place without a ballot and will be investigated.

The employees walked off their jobs at midday demanding the reinstatement of their managing director, Peni Mau, who they said was forced to resign last week.

They also demanded the sacking of the Post Fiji board and its chairman, leading businessman Mahendra Patel.

The striking workers agreed to return to work after a union delegation visited the deputy military commander and head of the government's new complaints office, Captain Esala Teleni, and claimed they were assured their demands would be met.
