Fiji interim administration pushes for salary cuts by statutory bodies

8:57 am on 14 March 2007

Fiji's interim administration wants all state-owned commercial companies and statutory bodies to consider giving their staff a 5% pay cut in line with the civil service.

This has been confirmed by the minister for the public service and public sector enterprises, Poseci Bune.

Mr Bune says government funding to statutory bodies has been reduced by 5% and they should follow the public service by effecting a pay cut for staff.

The 11 state-owned companies and 9 statutory bodies which fall under this category are looking into the pay cut proposal and will hold further talks with the minister soon.

The Fiji Revenue and Customs authority will implement a pay cut from tomorrow (Thursday) but its staff association has filed a court challenge against it.

The chairman of Post Fiji, Mahendra Patel, says the company is 100% state owned and he would not be surprised if he gets an order to implement a pay cut.
