Fiji's Great Council of Chiefs will meet in Suva early next month to appoint a new vice president.

This has been confirmed by the interim minister of Fijian affairs, Ratu Epeli Ganilau.

Ratu Epeli says the president, Ratu Josefa Iloilo, would make his nomination for the vice presidency.

He says there won't be any nominations from the 14 indigenous provinces or the three traditional confederacies.

Ratu Epeli says the new vice president would complete the balance of the term of office of the previous vice president, Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi.

Ratu Joni resigned after the military takeover in December.

Ratu Joni had replaced the former vice president, Ratu Jope Seniloli, who was jailed for four years after conviction for taking an illegal oath to usurp the presidency during the May 2000 coup.
