The police in Solomon Islands say although the zero tolerance policy in place in Honiara for the 11th Festival of Pacific Arts is working well, it will not be a permanent measure.
Honiara is the main venue for the four-yearly event, which is drawing daily crowds of tens of thousands to the Pacific Village site.
The acting deputy commissioner of police says it is amazing that in the first few days of the festival there were only eight arrests in the capital.
Nathaniel Mosese says although the zero tolerance policy was largely responsible, the police don't want to take such a hardline approach all the time.
"We have issues that can be best dealt with through understanding, by just talking to people and trying to educate them and giving them warnings. We don't want to jump to conclusions and keep throwing people into custody."
Nathaniel Mosese says there are customary ways of dealing with disputes that are more suited to the Solomon Islands way of policing.
