Fiji court overturns pay cuts at Customs Authority

3:36 pm on 20 March 2007

The Suva High Court has ordered the Fiji Island Revenue and Customs Authority to re-instate the pay of all staff following a five-percent pay cut across the board in the last pay.

The staff association's general secretary, Kenneth Zinck, says the court has directed the authority to restore the pay of all workers.

This comes as public sector unions are set to defy the military-appointed government whose emergency decree bans strikes which are being considered in protest at the pay cuts announced in the last budget.

The unions maintain that they have a right to go on strike under the 1997 constitution which the military commander has said he will uphold.
