Parliamentary Committee in Samoa wants review of overseas study scholarships

Samoa's government has been asked to consider ceasing all scholarship awards to overseas universities to save funds for programmes at the National University of Samoa or NUS.

The chair of the Education Committee, Levaopolo Talatonu, says it recommended that the government stop funding overseas study for courses that are offered in Samoa.

Levaopolo says the committee wanted the government to consider purchasing a new standby generator as the existing generator can only cater for lights and not the whole compound's electrical needs.

Water problems at NUS were also highlighted.

The committee said the existing water tank can not cater for the whole University.

The shortage of water has disrupted some of the University's programmes because lectures had to stop when the water supply is disconnected.
