The New Zealand soccer side have been thrashed four-nil by world cup finalists Costa Rica, in the opening match of their two game Central and South American tour.

Down two nil early in the first half the New Zealand side struggled to control the ball and retain possession on the artificial pitch.

The All Whites struggled to to adapt to coach Ricky Herbert's game plan of three defenders rather the usual four.

The All Whites next game is against Venezuela on Thursday.
