Several policemen in Papua New Guinea have assaulted and injured the director of police prosecutions, Chief Superintendent Thomas Eluh.

The Post Courier newspaper reports that Superintendent Eluh was stopped in the Post Moresby area and beaten after he fled to the Gordon police station.

The commander of the National Capital District, Alfred Reu, says he ordered his staff to get Mr Eluh to deliver him a suspension order for a range of alleged offences under the police force act.

Commander Reu says he never instructed his officers to beat Superintendent Eluh.

The newspaper reports that reporters found several policemen drinking alcohol at the back of the police station, who fired their guns in the air.
