Saipan public services suspended - mayor says there is no money

7:03 pm on 29 March 2007

The mayor of Saipan in the Northern Marianas has suspended public services, citing a lack of money to buy fuel for its operations.

Services affected include water truck deliveries, quarry operations and deliveries, road repairs, junk car removals, site preparations for funerals, village clean-ups, and beautification projects.

Juan Tudela told the Saipan Tribune that payments to Mobil Oil by the department of finance have been delayed.

He said the office of management and budget had informed him of drastic budget cuts and the need to reduce spending on salaries by nearly 40 percent.
