Fiji's Ba chiefs call for early election

The chiefs of Fiji's largest province, Ba, are calling on the interim administration to hold general elections as early as possible for the sake of the economy - especially the tourism industry.

The Fiji Times reports that this was the decision of a two-day meeting of Ba chiefs which ended yesterday.

The most senior provincial official or Roko Tui Ba, Viliame Seuseu, is quoted as saying they are concerned with the political situation since the December 5 military takeover, because it has severely affected tourism.

Mr Seuseu says there are many major hotels in the province which provide employment but if that is affected, villagers will suffer.

He says some hotel employees have been on reduced hours since December.
