Fiji council in Ba calls for elections to be brought forward

5:45 pm on 30 March 2007

There has been another call in Fiji for elections to be held earlier than suggested by the military-backed government.

The Ba Provincial Council says for the sake of economic growth, the election should be held as early as possible.

It says the province has several hotels that provide employment for villagers.

The military says it has put in place a roadmap that has to be followed.

It says the interim administration and no-one else will decide when elections will be held.

It has said they will be in 2010 at the earliest.
