Relief efforts underway in Solomon Islands

Relief and search and rescue missions will continue today in the tsunami-stricken Western and Choiseul provinces of Solomon Islands.

At least 12 people have died because of the powerful earthquake and tsunami which hit western parts of the country yesterday.

A Solomon Islands government spokesperson, George Herming, says the government has sent a team to assess what relief work needs to be done in the area.

"The Gizo hospital was closed and there was some health centres which were also destroyed and some authorities in the Provinces reported that the damages could amount to some millions of damages."

George Herming says the government has sent tents, food, and water to the worst affected areas, and will decide on further assistance when the extent of damage is known.
