The Australian oil and gas exploration company Santos Limited has officially announced that it has aligned with ExxonMobil in evaluating a five million to 6.5 million-tonne a year liquefied natural gas or LNG facility for Papua New Guinea.

The company's annual report said the Hides gas field in the Southern Highlands, in which Santos has a 25% interest, is the largest known gas resource in the region and would be expected to be the cornerstone of any LNG project.

The National newspaper reported initial studies located the potential sites for LNG on PNG's southern coast.
