The Cook Islands fought bravely on their IRB under-19 rugby world championship debut in Northern Ireland, but couldn't hold off Chile's powerful pack losing 29-14.

The Cook Islands spent much of the first half defending their line and trailed 12 nil at halftime.

But they got into the game towards the end of the half, gaining some territory of their own, with full back Terry Toki making some strong runs through Chile's back line.

Two minutes into the second half Cook Islands' captain Henry Strickland received a red card, but the debutants were valiant as ever and went on to score their first points of the tournament when second row Norman Heather touched down following a prolonged period of pressure.

The match was a close affair until the final whistle with two late tries for Chile.

But the Cook Islands had the final say with Heather crossing for his second try.

The Cook Islands next game is against Tonga who thrashed Uruguay 36-5 with Lepaola Taueli and Salesi Sete both scoring two tries apiece.

Sione Toke added the extra points with two conversions and four penalties.
