Call for laws in Fiji to fight cyber crime

7:36 am on 5 April 2007

There's been a call in Fiji for stringent laws and especially trained investigators to effectively fight cyber crime.

An academic at the University of the South Pacific, Dr Ravi Prasad, says criminal elements are using information technology to commit crimes and using its security to hide their activities.

The Fiji Times quotes Dr Prasad as saying cyber crime is attracting a number of criminals because it is easy to commit, difficult to detect and the rewards are much larger than the risks involved.

He says cyber crimes are bleeding organisations the world over and threatening their very existence, as losses run into the trillions of dollars.

Dr Prasad says in most cases, territorial laws are inadequate to prosecute the crime in cyber space which doesn't know traditional borders.
