3:12 pm on 6 April 2007

The Oceania Football Confederation President, Reynald Temarii is confident his request to the world governing body FIFA for a charity match to raise funds for those affected by the tsunami in Solomon Islands will be approved.

Mr Temarii put the proposal to FIFA president, Sepp Blatter, with the aim of collecting funds to be distributed among the victims of the disaster.

He says every year FIFA provides one charity match for humanitarian causes and invite the world's best footballers to take part.

"I requested from the FIFA president we should organise for the first time in the history in Oceania the charity match in Oceania, but I don't know where it could be organised, I think it will be in New Zealand, I will work with the General Secretary of the Oceania Football Federation to define the date and the format of this game."

Mr Temarii says former France football international Christian Karembeu formerly of New Caledonia will also be assisting with organising the charity match.
