Cyclone Cliff spares Tonga after hitting Fiji

3:11 pm on 6 April 2007

After battering parts of Fiji, Cyclone Cliff appears to have left Tonga unscathed.

The storm stayed at least 100 kilometres away from the main island of Tongatapu.

The duty forecaster at Tonga's Meteorological Service, Neniasi Havea, says the winds were lower that predicted:

"We don't expect is has much damage as the wind we recorded over here was only 30 knots, but the wind that was forecast was 50, 50 knots"

Mr Havea says a strong wind warning is still in place for Tongatapu and 'Eua waters, but he says that is likely to be downgraded later today.
