Bad weather delays Wallis and Futuna assembly president's election

4:17 pm on 6 April 2007

The election of a new president of the assembly of Wallis and Futuna has been deferred until next week because of bad weather.

Strong winds forced the cancellation of flights between the two islands and prompted the authorities to cancel today's election.

Last weekend, a new 20-member assembly was elected for a five-year term.

The assembly includes three new members but is unclear what sort of a majority will emerge as they have been chosen along clan lines.

Another attempt to elect an assembly president will be made on Wednesday.
