New Fiji vice-president to be named tomorrow

10:04 am on 10 April 2007

Fiji's president, Ratu Josefa Iloilo, will name his new vice president at a meeting of the Great Council of Chiefs in Suva tomorrow.

The Fiji Times reports that this has been revealed by the interim minister for Fijian affairs, Ratu Epeli Ganilau.

Ratu Epeli says the occasion will be unique in that President Iloilo will make the announcement himself.

He says in normal circumstances the vice president would be nominated and then endorsed through consultations with the Great Council of Chiefs.

Ratu Epeli says if the chiefs oppose the President's nominee tomorrow, they could reject it but this would be a stumbling block to moving the country forward.

The vice presidency became vacant when Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi resigned after the military overthrew the Qarase government last December to begin its clean-up campaign.
