Former Fiji PM says new vice president has been chosen by the military

Fiji's Great Council of chiefs is due to confirm the appointment of a new vice president today.

The selection has already been made by the President, Ratu Josefa Iloilo.

The ousted Prime Minister, Laisenia Qarase, believes it is up to the President to choose his own deputy, when someone has resigned during their term in office.

But Mr Qarase says he believes the selection was made elsewhere:

"Well one thing is certain is that the choice will be the military's choice, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that that will be the case."

Mr Qarase says the Great Council of Chiefs should have the authority to reject the nomination if it wishes to.

The new Vice President will serve the remaining four years of the five year term of his predecessor Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi.

Ratu Joni resigned after the military coup last December
