French Polynesia's Tahoeraa disunity becomes public

9:30 am on 12 April 2007

The leader of French Polynesia's Tahoeraa Huiraatira Party has warned that the party as it has been known is at risk of disappearing.

Gaston Flosse has told a meeting of about 300 delegates that the government led by his party colleague, Gaston Tong Sang, is one imposed on terms set by a number of outer island MPs.

Mr Flosse says with the Tahoeraa being the biggest party in the ruling coalition, he expects the assembly to elect his son-in-law Edouard Fritch as assembly president in tomorrow's scheduled vote.

He says dissent on the matter would lead to the opposition's Antony Geros winning the assembly presidency.

Mr Flosse has also demanded that Mr Tong Sang sack a minister, Pierre Frebault, claiming that he was only given the post because of pressure applied by his brother, Jean-Alain Frebault.

Mr Flosse has also told Mr Tong Sang to immedately sack Jean-Alain Frebault as the chairman of the board of the state-owned OPT telecommunications company.
