Wallis and Futuna chooses Taputai as assembly president

1:13 pm on 12 April 2007

The assembly of Wallis and Futuna has elected as its new assembly president Pesamino Taputai.

Mr Taputai was chosen by 12 of the assembly's 20 members and replaces Emeni Simete.

In his maiden speech, Mr Taputai called on local leaders to deal with ongoing feuds that have marred relations since a brief armed rebellion in support of the king of Wallis two years ago.

The election of an assembly president was to be held last week but poor weather forced it to be cancelled.

The assembly was elected at the beginning of the month with voters choosing its members largely along clan lines.
