Niue premier warns of losses for those staying overseas

3:34 pm on 13 April 2007

Niue's premier, Young Vivian, says he wants to make Niueans living overseas aware that they are losing a lot by not living on the island, and in particular they may forego land.

Young Vivian says claims over land have divided many families and he wants this to end and for families to sit down and discuss the issue, instead of taking it to court.

And he says it is even more difficult for those people who have been living overseas for a number of years.

"Because they will lose land by default because if they have gone away for 20 or 30 years, how can they remember their land if they do not touch base with their relations, how are they going to get back here and sort things out with their families."
