Tongan Privy Council extends Nuku'alofa emergency period

Tonga's Privy Council has approved a further extension of the emergency period covering Nuku'alofa for another thirty days from next Tuesday, April 17th.

The current state of emergency was to end next Monday.

Radio Tonga quotes the Kingdom's Police Minister, Siaosi 'Aho, as saying the decision was based on his recommendation.

The Minister says that recommendation was based on information gathered by his officers that people feel safe and secure while police and defence personnel are still in place.

He says he personally would like to see the emergency period lifted, but his recommendations to government depend on what the public wants and information collected by police officers.
